In design tie the sides of the shape together with a pattern of shadow. Then draw in the form with deep shadow (dark) leaving the light area to the last. The whole picture will thus fall into a simple scheme of light, halftone and dark.

About Me
I am a long-time art student, and avidly continue my art studies in this blog. However, I have a husband and three small children, so I don't have the free time to make art that I wish I did. This blog contains the stolen scribblings I've made in spare moments. Someday I'll improve!Tags

Cloud sea development
Been tinkering with this, trying to get the atmospheric perspective, and the sense of vast depths and overwhelming light. Also a zeppelin that doesn’t look lumpy. It’s harder than it sounds.
Cloud sea with color
There, now you can kind of see how my sketch back there is supposed to look. “Look at you. Sailing through the air majestically. Like an eagle. Piloting a blimp.” – Portal 2
Cloud sea
A zeppelin sails through a vast sea of clouds all full of color from the setting sun. Because there’s totally a lot of color in this sketch. Yeah!
Anchored with rocks
I’ve thought and thought about this seascape, and how to make it really memorable. Make it tell a story, you know? Anyway, I scrubbed in some rocks with my digital palette knife, and bingo, the picture worked. Before there was … Continue reading
Two gradients
James Gurney, on his blog, had a post a while back about the sky’s dual gradations. Everybody knows that the sky is dark blue at the top and gets lighter and lighter down toward the horizon. But it had never … Continue reading
Step by step: Clouds progression
This is a continuation of this post. I promised a demonstration of how I layered together my colors, so here it is, rather sloppy and scribbly, but it should give you an idea of what it looks like. This is … Continue reading
Wanderer, step by step
I’ve been staring at really great paintings of clouds lately, and decided I was going to learn to do that. But I’ve had no idea how to grasp cloud structure. They must form shapes, but I’ve never been able to … Continue reading
