Soundbreaking provides unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated artists, producers, and music industry pioneers of all time, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry, Steven Van Zandt, Chuck D, BB King, Brian Eno, Tom Petty, Roger Daltrey, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Smokey Robinson, Quincy Jones, RZA, Roger Waters, St. Vincent, Rick Rubin, Bonnie Raitt, Questlove, and Beck. The series explores a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation, from the Beatles’ groundbreaking use of multitrack technology to the synthesized stylings of Stevie Wonder, from disco-era drum machines to the modern art of sampling. You’ll hear the songs you love in a whole new way.

Viewer Reviews

  • Freaking Great!

    By faninberkeley

Chiming in with the other reviewers—this is one of the best documentary series I’ve ever seen. Great interviews, great behind-the-scenes stuff, beautifully shot and edited, and very relevant to the way we listen to music now. Passing on to everyone I know that missed the series on PBS.
  • Great programming

Agree with others who said they couldn't believe Soundbreaking didn't get more recognition! Watched the series on PBS and now will enjoy every interview again at my leisure. Worth every penny. A journey through music and the people behind the sounds.

The full episodes are up now, so I'm updating my review to reflect the content. It's great. I'm really glad this series was created, and that the full episodes were made available on iTunes. If you're into recording technology and music definitely check this series out.
  • Wow how is this not getting more buzz??!!

    By FreshlySqueeeeezed

While scrolling through my Directv hell I accidentally landed on PBS and saw an ad for what I thought was a movie. Turns out it's not a movie BUT AN 8 PART TV SHOW!?!?!?! I watched the first episode but wanted more so I came on here to see if it was available. Christmas came early because I can watch the whole thing!!!! Kudos to the filmmakers behind this genius work of art. Half way through my binge and it's my favorite show of 2016.
  • Awesome Series!!

    By Zadina777

Wow, if the rest of the episodes are anything like last night's, this series will be amazing! And from the descriptions on the Soundbreaking website, I can tell they will! The previous reviewer's must not have read the fine print that the episodes are available to download the day after they broadcast. So don't worry, you will get your full episode download!
