This is an okay series that ultimately suffers because it is so superficial. It tries to focus on the individual stories or stories at the unit level. But, it inadvertently tends to misrepresent history. For example, in the episode dealing with the Battle of Nashville, the series focuses on the role played by the 13th USCT in attacking the Confederate left. The impression is left that because of this attack, the Federals were ultimately successful in destroying the Army of Tennessee. Yet, the truth is somewhat different. Some two weeks before, Hood, the Rebel Commander, almost wrecked his army at the Battle of Franklin, where he lost almost one third of his infantry in trying to overwhelm the entrenched Federals through a series of bloodly frontal attacks. He also lost some 13 commanding generals (either dead or wounded), including the talented Pat Cleburne (dead). Consequently, when Hood got to Nashville, he lacked the troops to pose a threat and he lacked a real plan (except for tempting the Federals out to attack his position). This important background information is either omitted or given very little time. Consequently, the series is entertaining, dramatic and highly superficial. Pity! The battles selected were important.
