Set against Scotland’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes, this tense thriller follows Annie Redford (Laura Fraser, Breaking Bad, The Missing), a small-town detective thrown into her first murder case. When a man is found dead at the bottom of a cliff, DCI Lauren Quigley (Siobhan Finneran, Downton Abbey, Happy Valley) arrives to lead the inquiry, along with forensic psychologist Blake Albrighton (Don Gilet, EastEnders). The local police clash with these outsiders, but when more bodies turn up, the team theorizes that a serial killer is stalking the shores of Loch Ness. As the case swells to engulf the whole town, Annie becomes immersed in the investigation, unintentionally pushing away her husband (Gray O’Brien, Coronation Street) and teenage daughter (Shona McHugh). With grief, terror, and suspicion shattering her community, Annie strives to expose the monster hiding in plain sight. Tightly plotted and suspenseful, this twist-filled mystery will “keep [you] hooked” (The Washington Post).

Viewer Reviews

  • Moody and atmospheric hot mess

    By MacTerrell

Starts out pretty good but by the final two episodes devolves into a hot mess that veers into the realm of the absurd. It's as though the writers started playing drinking games halfway through and were punch drunk by the time they wrapped up the story, which has plot holes large enough for Nessie to swim through. Such a waste -- instead of all the crazy and ridiculous plot twists, the writers could have simply identified the killer early on and focused the series' tension on the efforts of the police to identify the killer and gather enough evidence to bring charges. It's difficult to relate to any of the characters; the Loch Ness tour boat operators come across as the the most sympathetic figures. I gave it 3 stars because it's worth watching just for the stunning scenery and great cinematography.
  • British Mystery At It's Finest!

    By RoadKingClassic

I'm a big fan of this type of drama and this is one of the best. Great characters, tons of red herrings and a magnificent ending. Highly recommended.
  • DECIDEDLY better than Boredchurch

    By Orlando789

A fresh breath of air, involved plot, unexpected twists & turns, and breathtaking scenery. I would compare it to Vera and Shetland, both in the local flair and the quality of writing / acting. Some people actually claim to like those depressing, politically correct, awkward characters of Bored Church, just no one I know … Please give us a season 2!
  • OMG that was a compelling crime drama

    By shades_of_grey

I first started watching because I've alway wanted to visit Loch Ness and I was curious about how good the cinematography in the show would be. It looks like a chilly but beautiful region. I became hooked on the interesting characters, especially Laura Fraser's Annie Redford who seems connected to all the people of the town. I loved how multiple suspects developed and then were resolved by their own personal dramas. We get to the final suspect with a tense satsifactory climax.
  • If you like soaps ...

    By Dal1808

.. you'll probably like this series. Apart from the superior title sequences and the occasional serial killing, it's all soap. The writing is poor, the acting is patchy and the characters are all unsympathetic. No amount of picturesque scenery can make up for the shortcomings here.
  • Yes

    I really enjoyed it
  • Slow burning murder mystery

    By Jdoathout

This murder mystery/drama is only slowed down as it develops the characters back stories. Given that the show introduced not one but two murders in its pilot, the development of both plot lines are well written, developed and bound together well. I originally downloaded the free pilot thinking it would be a sci-fi docudrama on "Nessy". The characters lives revolve around the myth and legend but the plot clearly makes it a point to show this is about the characters not a myth. Download the pilot episode and you may want to buy the series.
  • Better Than Broadchurch

    By Mission Accomplished

Good British myteries combine long shots of gorgeous landscapes, taverns (the older, the better), no nonsense detectives, bumbling constables, the grudges & secrets of the eccentric townsfolk and very eccentric murderers. This one has it all.
