Cartoon impresario Max Fleischer was among the first to bring the printed Superman comics to a wide audience in these fanciful 1940s shorts featuring the Man of Steel saving his true love, Lois Lane, battling mad scientists and overthrowing Nazis. Many of the slogans and attributes we ascribe to Superman today originated in this series, including the famous "Faster Than A Speeding Bullet" introduction. Bud Collyer performs the voice of Clark Kent/Superman, with Joan Alexander as Lois Lane.

  • Superman in a nutshell :D

    By LaughingGodzilla

"Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!" Good lord that works with the story. Any way, this is the definitve version of Superman! Max Fleischer studios, the guys behind the Popeye cartoons, brought in the later 30's and early 40's the Superman shorts. Unlike their previous cartoons this is in high quality animation, not to mention memorable episodes. Some of them indirectly influenced many things. For example, The Arctic Giant. People may have dismissed this because paleontologically speaking, it's silly. But think about it...a dinosaur the size of a building causing destruction and can not be stopped. Hmm...who does that sound like? It sounds like an inspiration to make Godzilla to me. Another inspirational short is The Mechanical Monsters. Some of you may have laughed at the mechanical designs because it was made in the golden age of sci-fi, but guess what? Those same robots made an appearance in Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow! Japoteurs may seem like a war propaganda to some, but guess what? When Superman pushes the airplane and prevents it from crashing and killing people. Guess what? Remember Superman Returns? In that movie, Superman did the same thing with that jumbo jet! The last one I'm gonna site is Showdown, which by the way, had the first Superman imposter. The George Reeves Superman series had an episode about an imposter Superman. Hmm, I wonder where they got the Idea for that? {Doink, doink! Nudge, nudge!} Watch these cartoons! You'll enjoy them so much you'll almost always have them on your iPod. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna watch Superman drag the train all the way to the trainstation in Billion Dollar Limited.
  • This IS Superman

    By Garrett W 1996

"Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a runaway locomotive! Able to leap buildings in a single bound! SUPERMAN!" Hearing that now, I don't see how I ever got by on old VHS. These are the cartoons that defined Superman, IT IS THE COMPLETE SERIES!!!! There are 2-3 episodes in each "episode." These are incredible cartoons, animation like this is a rarity now. If you are a die-hard Superman fan, or a newcomer to his stories, these are for you!

  • These cartoons are great but don't buy from itunes!

    By tzitto

These ealy takes on the man of steel are still some of the best Superman stories around. But you should go find these at Target or something. I found these on 3 dvds for $1 each. It is rediculous that itunes will rip you off at $1.99 per episode and all they are giving you is a download.
  • Don't waste your time

Look in the dollar bin at any big chain. I got all of the episodes two years ago at Best Buy for $7 on DVD. Psst! (mpeg Converters are free)
  • Fleischer = Unforgetable!

    By jhumphrey

These are the cartoons that defined an era. You could pay $1.99 for each one, or you could find a classic cartoon podcast for free. The copyright (at one time) was up on these classics, and they were freely (and legally) available on the web. Something to look into...I got all the episodes for free in a podcast. Check it out!
