Viewer Reviews

  • Extraordinary

    By Ryakkan

This documentary is second to none. DAvid McCulough's narration is top notch and the imagery, sounds and commentary bring it a period of tragic, terrible but fascinating history to life.
  • Fully Restored?!

    By TheCompDoctor

There is no excuse for this restoration not to be 16:9. If you play it on your TV 40% of the screen real estate is wasted. Speaking of waste, don't waste your money on this. It's a rip-off. Remaster the thing for HD televisions and give this version away for free, PUBLIC television
  • Widescreen?

    By sewnqlt

Why is this not in widescreen? Was it produced that long ago?? Free on Amazon, so I'll watch it there.
  • Greatest Documentary of All Time

    By Code Red1980

I’ve watched this series about 5 times since it came out when i was 10. My dad really got me into history by getting me to watch this with him. It is still just as powerful today then it was 26 years ago. I’ve also visited Gettysburg 5 times since 2011 and am going back in a few weeks. I give all the credit to this documentary by Ken Burns. It covers absolutely everything about the civil war. Unlike some of these reviews, I don’t believe in giving a poor review based on how much money an episode costs. That’s simply not fair. Plus, don’t blame PBS or Ken Burns. iTunes sets the price. Email and complain to them. The only poor review that was not based on cost of the episodes, was someone saying that "you can go learn about it for free at your local library”. While that’s totally true, it’s still not a review of the documentary! If you want the best history lesson about the Civil War without having to touch a book, i urge you to watch this series. Possible alternatives to paying so much money to watch each episode would be to try and find it on Amazon for used. I guarantee it’ll be cheaper.
  • OK, now how about the HD version?

    By Stonewulf

This is an amazing series, not even more enjoyable with the release of the BluRay version. Please offer this and the Ken Burns series on the National Parks on 1080p please.
  • Waiting on HD Version

    By Husker Don

Great series... Any eta for the new HD version?
  • Can't wait for the HD

    By snorkfire

I wonder. All the complaints. Was that a price for HD? In any case, such outrage. Really? This was never a commercial product. That means the entire cost of making the documentary, broadcasting it, etc. comes out of the donation bucket. So? Is it clear that the unit price might be higher for a high quality PBS product than a commercial product. Come on kids. Try to demonstrate some perspective. Thanks in advance.

The movie series is great! But I teach Deaf and the Closed Captioning is not showing on anything I try - iPad, iTunes on a PC, and on a Mac. What about my students?!
