Look up! Look up! Prepare the way...The Messenger is coming! Oscar(R) winners Al Pacino ('Scent of a Woman'), Meryl Streep ('Kramer vs. Kramer') and Emma Thompson ('Howards End') lead an all-star cast in this two-part film directed by Mike Nichols ('The Graduate') and written by Tony Kushner, based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Set in a Reagan-era 1985 in which fantasy and reality interact and the AIDS epidemic is in full swing, the film follows a diverse group of real and imagined characters. Among them are Roy Cohn (Al Pacino), a fictionalized version of the closeted conservative; Hannah Pitt (Meryl Streep); Joe Pitt, Hannah's closeted Mormon son (Patrick Wilson); Joe's hallucinatory wife Harper (Mary-Louise Parker); Prior Walter (Justin Kirk), a gay man with AIDS; Prior's lover Louis (Ben Shenkman); Belize (Jeffrey Wright), a nurse who tends to Cohn and is a friend to Prior; a 'messenger' Angel (Emma Thompson); and an assortment of others.

Viewer Reviews

  • Bittersweet and immensely rich

    By Charlotte Fox Weber

This depicts an era with such acuity, wit, vibrancy, and finesse, it's easy to feel entirely immersed with the lives we are witnessing from rthe moment we are invites to watch. The horror of 80s AIDS, the brutality of the emotional synficiance of gay sex becoming terminal and catastraophic. What a bizarre and agonizing time period not talked about these days, not enough anyway. The splitting, the polarities, of Republidans and Democrats, Christians, Jews, Mormons, Gays and heterosexuals, it all plays out in this beautiful series with insight, groth, and the best acting possible. A beautiful story.
  • One of the best

    By despaina

One of the most unique and beautiful mini-series ever on television. Real, dramatic, touching, funny, and sad, directed by Mike Nichols and an amazing cast. Thought-provoking very superbly done.
  • Soaring Music and Story

    By Zeus God Bear

This one has it all, the story, the music, the cast! I've watched this dozens of times and it is always moving and affecting. So many great performances, and a triumphant musical score by Thomas Newman make Tony Kushner's story take wing, and it SOARS!
  • The greatest film ever made

The acting, the writing, the cinematography. Just everything. Angels is absolute amazing, a must watch several times over.
  • A truly beautiful film

    By SkepticalBaby

It doesn't get better than this. Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Jeffrey Wright, Mary Louise-Parker, all at the top of their game, accompanied by Mike Nichols' incredible direction and Tony Kushner's brilliant adaptation of his own epic play. Worth every penny. Don't hesitate to buy this film.
  • Absolutely the best!

    By TXcowboy39

When it comes to LGBT gay/lesbian movies, Angels in America has to be one of the best movie/series out there. I mean, it touches just about every hot topic issues that the community faces. HIV/AIDS, religion (just to name a couple), and is filled with plenty of drama and moments of comedy that at times your crying while laughing. It does have some fantasy elements, but it all ties in while being tasteful and not over done. I also have personal attachments to this film series being a recovering Mormon. Being raised within the church all my life, I know the struggles that are portrayed. Very close and accurate to say the least. I just wish this was also available as a novel. I know you can buy the book(s), but it only comes in play book/script format, which isn't very easy to read as a casual novel. I am also very happy that some schools and colleges are making this as a required read and dissertation with open discussions. It's one of many steps helping our communities and nation become more understanding and sympathetic to those with HIV/AIDS and accepting the gay the community at large. My #2 most favorite and recommended LGBT gay/lesbian movie is Latter Days. Another movie that I highly recommend to everyone who is looking for a movie within our community.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Angels in America. The acting was superb! The visual effects were well done. The plot captured the mood and pulse of the United States during the '80's.
