Ken Burns chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of the most prominent and influential family in American politics. It is the first time in a major documentary television series that their individual stories have been interwoven into a single narrative. This seven-part, 14 hour film follows the Roosevelts for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962.

Viewer Reviews

  • Manipulative Storytelling

    By Cinemanagement

Time and time again, Ken Burns plays up the drama of a moment to manipulate his audience into thinking what he deems the most captivating aspect to establish his subjects character. The audience is pulled into the grief Teddy was feeling in the loss of his wife and mother on the same day. So grief stricken, he isolates himself for 4 years in the Bad Lands, serving as a rancher to recover from the grief and build the man that he became. We discover in a subsequent segment that within months of Alice's death, he was secretly dating Edith and married within the year, settling in the east coast's estate of Sagamore. I felt totally manipulated by the omission of this critical bit of information within his dramatic 4 year solitude segment. I can watch no more and never will again Ken.
