In my opinion, this is simply a MASTERPIECE, and very likely the greatest American mini-series of all-time. As a white 7th grader in 1977, Roots was required television viewing by my junior high school. To say I was amazed would be an understatement. I remember my father, who was born in 1921, saying, “What was done to black people during the years of slavery was absolutely sickening and disgusting.” Fortunately, not all white people approved of slavery, and that is noted as well. The brutality is well-portrayed but so is the strength and determination of the black race. If you’ve never seen the original Roots, prepare to be amazed. The storyline is mesmerizing, and the acting is absolutely the best.

I remember when it first aired. Loved it then and love it now. For many of us it was the first Afro American history class we were afforded. Still historically accurate despite how it’s been picked apart since and still very enlightening.

I throughly enjoyed the newer version of Roots. Though I do appreciate the original, the remake was insightful in making viewers aware of the beauty and traditions of Africa.
