It’s 1592 and Will Shakespeare is at the beginning of his career. His early work is looked down on by the literary establishment, and he’s not taken seriously at home. And Will’s troubles don’t stop there. He’s under pressure to churn out more work, undermined by his snooty rival Robert Greene, and his badly behaved parents are living in his house. Follow the Bard's fictional early life and the rather surprising stories about where his best ideas came from.

Viewer Reviews

  • I love this show - you will too if you love British Humor

    By corbystephens

My wife and I watched this on Britbox. Honestly, it's so funny that you don't even notice the laugh track. At least we didn't. If you like The IT Crowd you will enjoy this. It's satire, not a historical documentary as some negative reviewers seem to be upset about. It makes light of our presuppositions about Will, his life and times, and point out our own modern day ironies. Great show, highly reocmmended.
  • Love it

Excellent show, love the writing, all characters are funny and likeable.. Ready for season 2.
  • Shakespeare it Ain't

    By Number 21

I really wanted to like this show. William Shakespeare was illiterate. He could not write anything with a quill. Nor, did he have any children. History aside, other than that, the humor is more old 1970's BBC bits. I only got through the first ten minutes of the first show. Will's father was telling him that he was bored by Will's efforts. As far as this show is concerned, I agree. If you have a jag for the Bard, see the movie "Shakespeare in Love," or "Anonymous," which are both available on iTunes. They are both excellent.
  • Very funny and clever

    By workworkwork

My wife and I are fans of both Shakespeare and Blackadder. Appropriately with the current celebration of 400 years of Shakespeare, "Upstart Crow" pokes some fun at the historical figure, presenting him as a ordinary man struggling to make a living with his writing. In addition, the show satirizes modern day British society, particularly performing arts and government. David Mitchell is perfectly cast as William Shakespeare. Like Rowan Atkinson, he specializes in long, elaborate monologues that get funnier the longer they go.
  • Brings me back

    By timothfiend

i usually hate live audience style laugh track comedies anymore, but this brings me right back to the days of blackadder, great cast, cant wait to see where this goes
  • exceptionally stupid

    By Grant27

this is grim, laugh-track, comedy, more an industrial accident than a TV show, It would bad in any case, but to drop it into the life of William Shakespeare is really just unforgivably dumb.
  • Witty, smart, fun

    By 212552Dr

As a fan of both the Bard and Mitchell I jumped at the chance to download the first free episode. I've watched it a few times since and just bought the series - it's that good. Can't wait to see them all.
  • Utterly destroyed by a law-track

    By Gene Esse

Written with all the panache (and timing) of a generic American sitcom, a point driven home with canned guffaws at the end of every line. Unbearable.
  • Fun

    By Mr. Loiter

If you liked Black Adder or Peep Show or Mitchell and Webb Look, you'll probably like this.
