Jeremy Irons returns as the ruthless patriarch Pope Alexander VI in the explosive new season of the Showtime Original Series THE BORGIAS. After exacting vicious punishment on all those who opposed them, the original crime family is at the apex of their power and influence – and with the world around them embroiled in war and turmoil, they will continue to exploit their allies, silence their critics, and solidify their legacies – but each in a different way. Rodrigo (Pope Alexander)– bored by his embarrassment of riches – doffs his papal robes in favor of a commoner’s dress to pursue a salacious life outside the confinement of Vatican walls. Cesare mercilessly continues to seek to prove his worth and ends up committing the one, unforgivable sin. Lucrezia, scorned by an abusive husband and left reeling by unrequited love, becomes hell-bent on vengeance. And Juan, unable to escape his mortal destiny, pays the ultimate price for crossing the line with his own flesh and blood. The seemingly unbreakable bonds of family will be tested like never before and this time, no one will emerge unscathed.

Jeremy Irons is really miscast in this. He plays the Borgia pope as if he were an english eccentric prone to the vapors. Irons doesn't seem even remotely Spanish- he doesn't even try. The other main actors are really good, especially those portraying Lucretzia and Cesare. I do wonder though - not that much is really known for sure about the Borgias, which leaves the writers plenty of room for invention, which they put to good use. With all this room to make stuff up, why do they think it is better to be wildly inaccurate when it comes to facts that are known, such as that Savonarola was confronted by a preacher who was not Cesare, and was burned in Florence, and that Alexander VI did abandon Rome when faced with the French? Why bother do a historical drama at all if you're going to distort the few known facts? That said, the show is visually stunning - just about the most beautiful cgi and costumes ever.
