This series chronicles the full sweep of African American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through five centuries of historic events right up to present day -- when America has a black President, yet remains a nation deeply divided by race. It explores the origins of the people from Africa whose enslavement led to the creation of the African American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives that African Americans have developed against unimaginable odds. All of these elements define black culture and society in its extraordinarily rich and compelling diversity from slavery to freedom, from the plantation to the White House. Hosted by Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and drawing on some of America's top historians and heretofore untapped primary sources, the series guides viewers on a journey across 500 years and two continents to shed new light on the experience of being an African American.

  • A Part of America's History Fully Explained!

A great show to learn about all of African American History. The good and the really bad. This tv series doesn't cherry pick and/or gloss over history like they tend to do in some American schools. African American history is also American history! Never forget that!

Not Americans but 'African Americans. Stop contributing to this garbage
  • A History of Great Success amongst Great Acts of Inhumanity

I think the episodes that I have viewed have already brought light to parts of American History that contribute to the current environment as it pertains to race relations in the United States. Many generations of systematic mistreatment of African Americans has paid it’s toll on the community so education like this documentary helps in providing understanding to a current generation that is so disconnected from true reality. I wish this documentary would be mandatory for all schools during “Black History Month”. This would create dialogue that might be constructive for our future generations.
  • Unity that's what is mis in these United States

    By Never could

I think the USA is not what it could be because it some times say one thing and do some things to make you wonder if the country is what it says it is I hope we do be mind full that it was not a mistake why things like this happen no mistake it was money and power for it to happen for 400 years for this country to stay for 150 years it have to be for all its people are it will not make it and this is know joke look at what's going on day in day out it can't be the country only united when its war that can't be so all the time this country as a dark pass that must never be forgotten
