From Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the hit series Lost, this one-hour drama focuses on a suburban town whose preconceptions are shattered in the wake of a global event dubbed “The Departure” (which may or may not have been the Biblical “rapture”), in which some people were taken and others left behind. Based on the bestselling 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta, the series focuses on denizens of the fictional town of Mapleton, three years after the fateful October 14 day when 140 million people – 2% of the world’s population – disappeared without a trace. Seen primarily through the eyes of beleaguered police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux – Mulholland Drive) and his family, the series shows how ordinary people react to inexplicable events that can unite or divide families and communities, revealing how the strain of an unprecedented calamity can turn people’s faith into cynicism, paranoia, madness, or cult-like fanaticism.

Viewer Reviews

  • Wholly Crap!

    By Buzlite

This series is a a cross between two movies, “Donny Darko” and “Rubber”. It is a series that draws you in by your need to make sense of the whole thing and holds you by wanting to see where they are going next. I find it well acted but the direction and writing are fairly off the wall. Started season 2, feel a little like Alice in trying to see what will happen after falling down the rabbit whole. See you on the other side, maybe?

  • The Best Show HBO Has Produced

    By the culture synthetic

Season one was fantastic yet, this show really blossoms in season 2. I promise you will find this to be one of the most gripping, moving, and original Shows you have ever watched. In season 2 every episode is beautifully and artfully composed. The cinematography, the acting, the music, and the writing is masterfully orchestrated down to the smallest detail. I hope HBO gives us a season 3.
  • It just never got anywhere

    By Lou Dory

I saw this series in Europe last year and kept watching in hope that it would develop into something revealing or interesting . . but it really didn't. It's a Rapture style story and that should tell you that those left behind (the people in this story) are not the creme de la creme and it's hard to have any sympathy or resonate with any of these people . . You might enjoy it but personally I found no one to like and eventually just stopped watching it after 6 or 7 episodes . . .
  • Slow, grim, depressing w/out excitement or intrigue

    By 333M333

Very slow, and very depressing. I don’t mind sad/depressing if the show is thought-provoking or engaging in some way, but it’s not. It’s just sad. And slow. And violent in an upsetting, sad way, without increasing excitement or intrigue or mystery or anything. And while there is a super-natural premise, it does not get explored in any meaningful way; it barely gets explored at all. Some of the characters, btw, don’t even talk because they belong to a group/cult that opposes talking, which makes the slowness of the show even slower. Good acting though; that’s the only good part really, and it’s not enough.
  • one world wide game of hide n’ go seek

    By Aud10tard

Max Ritcher’s emotive soundscape sets the emotive tone for the entire show. The “beauty”, “rawness”, “depressing” every other word used to describe the show. The show grabs you if you want it to the show WILL BE HORRIBLE if religious rhetoric bothers you, if scientific probability is what guides you in life and you’re unable to set what you believe down this show will probably be horrible. Read the “DETAILS” and if you think the show sounds ridiculous. This show is centered more around conflict within self, human nature and how the majority fears and hates what it can’t understand. The score has Max Richter written all over it, everything I’ve heard by Max Richter takes you through takes you through the emotional scope of what the show does. It will bring you to moments where something may be epically beautiful just to toy with your emotions and end leaving the melancholy feeling of beauty dying and uncertainty awaits you’ll feel unsettled and upset you didn’t get the closure and you’re still angry. It’s a show that is carefully crafted, maybe not… I do find it weird that the acting and direction in episode one is on a lower level than the next 9 episodes. The very first scene bugs the crap out of me, “lady shut your baby up…. oh geeezzz with the window rolled down that low your baby is going to fly out of the window or how about put a sign that says FREE BABY” I know… the scene needed to build tension. Some peoples reviews read like an AA group watches the show. The show is uber twisted. It’s fun if you have the patience.
