It is the eve of the Darcys’ annual ball at their magnificent Pemberley estate. Darcy and Elizabeth, now six years married, are relaxing with their guests after supper when the festivities are brought to an abrupt halt. A scream calls them to the window and a hysterical Lydia Wickham tumbles out of a carriage shrieking, “Murder!” What follows is the somber discovery of a dead man in Pemberley woods, a brother accused of murder, and the beginning of a nightmare that will threaten to engulf Pemberley and all the Darcys hold dear. Adapted from P.D. James’ clever whodunit, this delicious homage to Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice stars Anna Maxwell Martin (Bleak House), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Matthew Goode (The Good Wife), and Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who). Elizabeth and Darcy never knew marriage would be like this!

Viewer Reviews

  • Wrong Casting

    By Fountainheadgirl

Agree with some of the review. Casting for Elizabeth is all wrong. It takes away from the enjoyment of the show.
  • Horrible nonsense

    By Bearly44

What a complete waste of time. PD James rips off Austen, but does P&P absolutely no justice. Stupid plot, overworked, hysterical acting. Wow. What a mess.
  • I love Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice

    By TIMBERGIRL35

Yes, I agree Elizabeth was miscast. She is supposed to be witty, charming, attracrive, AND fiesty!! None of that shows through in the protrayal--go read the book!!!
  • 2 episodes or 3 ??

    By deadairman

First, an excellent production - one should review 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle just for an update. Second, the full series is now available (for free) on PBS, wrapped into 2 episodes instead of 3, which I only learned by purchasing episode #3 from iTunes to learn, "Hey, I've seen this before".
  • Worth the price and watching again

    By Film Critique

This was a jane-austen-characters-meet-charles-dickens-plot sort of movie. The characters were fairly austenish in their own right but the conversations were truly superb and I don't think Austen herself could have distinguished between her own writing and that of the script when characters were conversing. It was so enjoyable to see life after the Darcy wedding and I wish there were more such reinvention and continuations of austen characters. Thank you Masterpiece Theatre.
  • Lovely Adaptation

    By wanderer1979

Overall, I thought this was a lovely adaptation of the book. Any book to movie adaptation will always have certain problems with accelerating the story and skipping over portions, but I thought it was well done. Most of the characters were very well cast (particularly Darcy), but I wish they would have found a better choice for Elizabeth. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth is supposed to be one of the prettiest girls in Meryton. The actress was not only one of the least attractive in the miniseries, but she looks about 15-20 years older than Lydia and Georgiana, when Elizabeth was only about five years older than both. Elizabeth was also dressed very plainly throughout the miniseries- even if she didn't like opulence, someone of her station would have been dressed far better.
  • Beautiful Period Drama - Wrong Lizzie

    By MatureUniGirl

The cinematography is beautiful and the story, not too predictable and very enjoyable. A lovely evening’s escape into the delicious world of Austen’s characters. Although I really loved it, the character of Elizabeth was terribly cast. The actress is very good but really didn’t embody Lizzie for me at all, in fact her scenes took me right out of the story as I was distracted by her inappropriateness. She lacked Lizzie’s dark eyes and pleasing figure and Elizabeth was supposed to be more attractive than younger sister Lydia - who in this portrayal is stunning. Darcy & Wickham are perfect!
