I love that in making a show for Black viewers Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey decided to take a softer touch. A series can be groundbreaking for its storytelling and centering of Blackness without breaking our hearts and spirits in the process.
Everyone is struggling on Queen Sugar Season 2 Episode 1 but some are handling it better than others.
Nova, with her hidden dysfunction, will always take a moment to empower women, especially her aunt and baby sister:
The saga of the three Bordelon siblings reuniting at the family-owned sugarcane farm after their father’s death is rich in its examination of how families support one another.
The situation these characters face is all too typical and frustrating to watch. And the Bordelons keep on daring nevertheless.
