  • Yes, it is cropped

Seinfeld was NOT originally shot in a 16:9 format like some reviewers are claiming. It was shot on 35mm film which is actually a 3:2 format like DSLR’s shoot pictures or 35mm still film cameras. Seinfeld should’ve been re-mastered in the original 4:3 broadcast format but in HD or now UHD by re-scanning the negative (which they did for this HD release, but chose 16:9 aspect ratio for some reason). Cheers did do it the right way and their HD re-master is in its original 4:3 aspect and looks good.

  • Very satisfied

As someone who originally enjoyed this series mainly on DVD in the original 4:3 aspect ratio, I have to say that I am more than happy with the HD version, which loses a bit of the picture on the top and bottom but adds some on the sides. It has obviously been done with care and the high-res scan looks as sharp as the sources allow, which is generally quite nice. I will enjoy this collection for years to come. Seinfeld feels as relevant and smart as ever (which is more than Friends can say; don't @ me). And the 90s throwbacks are good for nostalgia anyways. Highly recommended!
